The Detroit Red Wings are poised to take the next step in their rebuilding process and hope to get closer to being an annual postseason participant this year thanks to multiple additions, both behind the bench and on the ice. But as the regular season approaches, there's still one important matter of personnel business to be decided apart from the list of names on the final roster.
According to head coach Derek Lalonde, the team hasn't decided on who will be wearing the "A" on their sweaters this year as alternate captains, and there's no urgency to making that choice. In fact, Lalonde said that may not even be decided until after the start of the regular season next Friday night.
Per Ansar Khan of MLive:
Fans will remember that last year's assistant captains in Marc Staal and Danny DeKeyser are both no longer with the team; Staal signed a free-agent deal with the Florida Panthers, while DeKeyser wasn't retained after the expiration of his deal. He's since been cut by the Vancouver Canucks after agreeing to a professional tryout.
During exhibition play, both veteran David Perron and Tyler Bertuzzi wore the "A" on their sweaters, and both could be full time candidates to do so during the year.
