Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider has proven himself not only worthy of being a top-10 draft pick in the National Hockey League, but has firmly etched himself into the Calder Trophy discussion as the League's top rookie. And his efforts were rewarded when he was named the 1st Red Wings Calder Trophy winner since the mid 1960's earlier this summer.
And with the Calder win, it capped what was a season of accomplishment, to say the least. Among the accolades that he earned included setting a mark that only one other rookie defenseman in the last 25 years has accomplished by becoming only the second rookie defenseman aside from Vancouver's Quinn Hughes to put up 40 assists in a season, while also joining Nicklas Lidstrom and Reed Larson as the only rookie blue liners in franchise history to do so.
But are bigger and better things on the horizon for the German blue liner?
BetOnline (www.BetOnline.ag) has released their preseason odds on the major NHL awards, and Seider is included in the Norris Trophy odds along with the usual suspects of Cale Makar, Roman Josi and Victor Hedman. Right now, Seider comes in at No. 7 at 20-1 odds.
Norris Trophy (Top defenseman)
1. Cale Makar, Colorado 3/2
2. Roman Josi, Nashville 15/2
3. Victor Hedman, Tampa Bay 8/1
4. Adam Fox, N.Y. Rangers 9/1
5. Aaron Ekblad, Florida 12/1
7. Moritz Seider, Detroit 20/1
We're certainly looking forward to another season of Red Wings hockey with the reigning Calder Trophy winner patrolling the blue line!
