The Detroit Red Wings have been allowing their opponents to seemingly score at will in recent weeks, having gone through a stretch where they've surrendered 10+ goals not once but TWICE in just over a month, along with allowing nine to the NHL-worst Arizona Coyotes, eight against the non-playoff Chicago Blackhawks, seven against the Edmonton Oilers, and so on. 

Of course, the team also was outshot 11-0 in the first period earlier in the month by the expansion Seattle Kraken before allowing them to storm back with four 3rd period goals.

And yet, the maligned head coach Jeff Blashill, who has routinely had his team woefully unprepared to start and or finish games, continues to be employed by the team - for now. Whether or not GM Steve Yzerman elects to make the move that the majority of the fan base is calling for and make a change behind the bench when the season ends remains to be seen. 

But in the meantime, Blashill isn't concerning himself with his status.

"In this business, you never know your future," Blashill said earlier today. "That never changes at any point. I've always said, your contract status just gives you financial security. The reality is, we're in the highest level of sports so certainly you understand you have to get the job done."

"I’ve been at this seven years and I’ve gone through lots of ups and downs," he continued. "What you learn over time is to focus on what you can control, and that’s trying to get our ship back in a better direction. So while I understand the questions on that, it’s not at all what my focus is. And honestly, the work and effort that it takes to get this thing back on track is so immense that you can’t waste time on things that are really out of your control."

The Red Wings will try to get back on track tonight when they host the New York Rangers at Little Caesars Arena.
