MUST SEE: Red Wings welcome back emotional Darren Helm with video

The former Red Wing returned to Detroit for the first time last night.

Michael Whitaker

He spent over a decade playing with the Detroit Red Wings, winning the Stanley Cup in 2007-08 and gaining a reputation of being one of the fastest players in all of hockey.

However, his time and usefulness had come to an end with the Red Wings, and he wasn't retained by GM Steve Yzerman this past summer. He decided to take his talents to the Colorado Avalanche, signing a one year deal with Detroit's former hated rival.

He even scored against his former teammates during their game in Denver on December 10 as part of a 7-3 victory for the host Avalanche.

Last night, he made his return to Detroit as a member of the opposition for the first time. And during the 1st period of his new team's 5-2 win, the Red Wings honored his time in the Motor City with a special video tribute. And Helm was obviously grateful, with visible tears:

In 744 career NHL games with the Red Wings, he tallied 112 goals and 139 assists. Among his career highlights with Detroit include scoring the overtime winning goal in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals against the Chicago Blackhawks, as well as hitting the empty net against the San Jose Sharks in Game 6 of the semi-finals to seal the victory to tie the series at 3-3.
