New Red Wings forward Andrew Copp has words for captain Dylan Larkin

The two former Wolverines are now teammates with the Red Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings got the ball rolling in the National Hockey League's free agency period on Wednesday afternoon, immediately inking former Winnipeg Jets and New York Rangers forward Andrew Copp to a five year contract.

Copp already has several local ties, having been born in Ann Arbor and playing collegiately at the University of Michigan. And it's a bit of a role reversal now with his once-again teammate in Dylan Larkin. The pair played together with the Wolverines, during which Copp served as team captain. Of course, it's Larkin who wears the C on his sweater for the Red Wings, and that irony isn't lost on Copp.

"I talked to him a couple days ago, just bouncing ideas off of him and seeing where he's at and everything like that. It was an encouraging talk, and he was always hinting at getting me to come back home. We talked today and talked about the additions, and both of us are excited for where this team is headed."

"It's funny, being his captain at Michigan and now he's mine in Detroit. That's pretty cool."

The Red Wings are certainly going to be viewed as a team on the rise, as they have current reigning Calder Trophy winner Moritz Seider patrolling the blue line as well as Lucas Raymond up front in addition to the established presence of Dylan Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi. Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman made several more additions to the roster aside from Andrew Copp, bringing aboard the likes of Dominik Kubalik, Olli Maatta, Ben Chiarot, and David Perron, as well as trading for goaltender Ville Husso.

Copp is excited to be a part of the rebuilding process for the Red Wings, though he doesn't believe that Larkin was putting too much pressure on him to return to his home state.

"Just to hear his thoughts of where the team was and how I could add and those kinds of things," Copp said. "I don't know if he was putting on too much of a recruiting pitch, just trying to answer my questions. But he knew I was interested and wanted me to make a decision; I think we're both really excited to be back together."
