Prospect Jan Bednar addresses his future with Red Wings

The Red Wings have plenty of future options in net.

Since being selected with the 107th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, goaltender Jan Bednar has continued to ply his trade on the international stage, and is currently suiting up at the IIHF World Junior Championship in Edmonton representing Czechia.

But what does his future in the National Hockey League wearing the Winged Wheel hold?

“Honestly, I don’t know yet,” Bednar explained during an interview with the iSport.cz website. “I don’t want to deal with it at all, I have a fight for the World Cup ahead of me. Then we’ll see if I get an invitation to camp in Detroit and a contract offer.

“There is some feedback there, but I don’t want to go into details. If I said something now, it could be different then. I certainly don’t think I’m out of options.”

Of course, this year's version of the Red Wings are already set between the pipes with the second year of Alex Nedeljkovic; he'll be paired with the newly acquired Ville Husso, whom general manager Steve Yzerman acquired in a deal with the St. Louis Blues earlier this offseason. Meanwhile, Thomas Greiss has taken his talents to the Blues in the form of a free agent deal, ending his two year tenure in the Motor City.

The towering Sebastien Cossa is waiting in the Wings (no pun intended), while the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins appear to be set in the crease with the likes of Victor Brattstrom, Jussi Olkinoura and John Lethemon.

“I can stay in the junior, which is also a great option,” Bednar said. “I have everything there that I need for my development.”

Bednar has already played two seasons for Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League; he amassed a 28-14-4 record last season with a 2.72 goals against average, .912 save percentage and two shutouts.
