Red Wings already dealing with injuries

Detroit will be shorthanded to begin the season.

The Detroit Red Wings gather for training camp in Traverse City, Mich. later this week, but they're going to be considerably shorthanded on the ice - and the player at the top of the injury list happens to be one of their key offseason acquisitions.

Forward Andrew Copp, who was signed to a five year contract in July, recently underwent abdominal surgery and will be absent through training camp and the exhibition schedule, though he's on track to return to the lineup and make his Detroit debut during the first week of the regular season.

Meanwhile, forward Robby Fabbri continues his rehabilitation from a torn ACL suffered this past March. Along with newly acquired defenseman Mark Pysyk, the pair are expected to return to action sometime after the new year. They're joined on the shelf by defenseman Jake Walman, who underwent shoulder surgery during the offseason and is expected back during the month of November.

Finally, prospect forward Chase Pearson has taken a leave of absence from the team due to a personal issue.
