Red Wings defenseman Mark Pysyk suffers a major injury.

He will likely miss a significant portion of the season.

The Detroit Red Wings have just announced a major injury.

According to an announcement from the organization's official social media accounts, recently signed defenseman Mark Pysyk has suffered a torn achilles tendon. This is a very significant injury and, again according to the Red Wings, Pysyk is now expected to miss 4 to 6 months after recently undergoing successful surgery.

It is a tough blow for the 30 year old veteran defenseman and I hope that he will be able to make a full recovery and return to 100% when he does eventually return to action. The former Buffalo Sabres first round draft pick (23rd overall) at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft had only just signed his contract with the Red Wings 11 days ago, making this very unfortunate timing for the Red Wings organization as well.

Last season he appeared in 68 games for the Buffalo Sabres, scoring 3 goals and adding 9 assists for a total of 12 points, finishing the season with a plus minus rating of -4.

This latest announcement from the Red Wings would also appear to shed some additional light on an earlier announcement from the Red Wings on Monday morning, the addition of veteran defenseman Robert Hagg to their roster. It may have been purely a coincidence of course, but I suspect that the signing of Hagg is directly related to the fact that Pysyk will not be available to start the upcoming regular season.
