Report: Red Wings could look for deal with Boston Bruins

Is another move potentially in the works?

Red Wings Feed

It goes without saying - the 2022-23 edition of the Detroit Red Wings that hit the ice in October for their opening night matchup against the Original 6 rival Montreal Canadiens will look far different than the squad that finished last season as the NHL's worst defensive team.

And that's mostly due to the multiple additions made by general manager Steve Yzerman, who inked multiple players to new contracts to join the up and rising team including Andrew Copp, Dominik Kubalik, Ollii Maatta, Ben Chiarot, and David Perron, as well as the acquisition of goaltender Ville Husso.

But could Yzerman have more tricks up his sleeve? We've learned to never underestimate what might be going on inside of that Hall of Fame mind of his. As of right now, the team currently enjoys approximately $10 million worth of salary cap space. Are more moves on the way?

According to Michael DeRose of The Hockey Writers, don't be stunned to see if Yzerman decides to try and pluck a name or two from the Original 6 rival Boston Bruins. He listed veteran forward Craig Smith, who was the subject of a reported Bruins trade that ultimately fell through, as well as defensemen Connor Clifton and Mike Reilly as candidates.

"When looking at the Red Wings’ defensive group, it’s fair to say that he could be a good fit," DeRose wrote of Reilly.

Meanwhile, Smith is entering the final season of the three year, $9.3 million deal that he inked prior to the 2020-21 NHL campaign, while Clifton is a right-handed shot that could essentially replace Mark Pysyk, another signing of Yzerman's that will miss the next 4-6 months recovering from surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon.

Would any of these names move the meter for you in a potential additional acquisition by Yzerman?
