Report: Red Wings could still pursue John Klingberg

Could Detroit still land another veteran NHL talent?

Red Wings Feed

The Detroit Red Wings entered the 2022 NHL free agency period with over $31 million worth of salary cap space, and they've spent much of it by bringing Andrew Copp, David Perron, Olli Maatta, Ben Chiarot, and Dominik Kubalik amongst others to the Motor City as general manager Steve Yzerman continues to reshape the roster into contending status.

However, they still may not be finished, currently boasting just over $10 million worth of cap space with which to continue to work with. Could Yzerman have another defenseman in mind to help shore up the blue line that, other than Calder Trophy winning blue liner Moritz Seider, was amongst the worst in the NHL last season? Don't be surprised to see another big move in Hockeytown, according to Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.

They both described Detroit as "the ultimate destination" for Klingberg, who is a native of Sweden - and everyone knows Detroit's rich history with Swedish players, particularly that of former defensemen Nicklas Lidstrom and Niklas Kronwall.

A 5th round selection of the Dallas Stars in 2010, Klingberg scored six goals with 41 assists in 74 regular season games, while also adding an assist in seven postseason games as Dallas fell to Calgary in Round 1. However, the stat that could give both Yzerman and Red Wings fans pause is the fact that Klingberg boasted a less than stellar -28 rating last season, the worst of his career.

In 552 career games, Klingberg has scored 71 goals with 303 assists and a career -8 rating. He's coming off a seven year, $29.5 million deal he inked in 2015 that saw him earn an AAV of $4.25 million.
